Crossing Guard
Prepare crossing zone and assist students in crossing streets safely on a seasonal basis while school is in session. Applicant must be available in the morning when school commences, releases for off-campus lunch break, and evening dismissal. Note: Effective 10/26/2026, hourly wage range will increase to $24.5163 - $28.3806. Supervision Received and Exercised Under the general supervision of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department. Has a very limited scope of supervision exercised while directing traffic and ensuring safety of students at intersections.
Knowledge of: Current California traffic laws, especially those relating to pedestrian right-of-way and speed limits in a school crossing area; and elements of traffic safety applying to motorists and pedestrians. Ability to: Communicate effectively verbally and in writing, using proper grammar and spelling; ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Work effectively with parents and school employees; establish and maintain respect and compliance of students. Use discretion and independent judgement in the safe crossing of children; accurate judgement in traffic flow, speed and direction of travel; prioritize activities; regular use of hand-held stop sign, reflective vest, and cones. Care for the use of materials, equipment, and tools. Evaluate situations and act properly and quickly in emergencies. Experience and Training: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required. Experience: Any relevant combination of training or experience. Specific job-related training will be provided by MLPD. Licenses: Must have (or obtain within state-required time frame of 10 days within residency) a valid State of California Class C Driver's License with an acceptable driving record and be able to pass an appropriate background check prior to the hire date.

This at-will position is part-time, with no benefits other than those required by state and federal law. Either the employee or the Town may terminate employment at any time for any reason, with or without cause. Part-time positions carry a maximum of 960 total paid hours per fiscal year and are not a guarantee of future employment with the Town of Mammoth Lakes. All Employment is conditioned on the results of applicable pre-employment checks. Compensation shown on this posting is the entire pay scale, in compliance with the California Equal Pay Act. However, please note that, "An employee will be appointed at the minimum rate for the class...Advancements in salary shall be based on a merit system...Step A [the minimum rate] will be the starting hiring rate...Employees shall be eligible for advancement to steps within the salary range upon satisfactory completion of an annual performance evaluation." Since January 1, 2023, The California Equal Pay Act has required that, "an employer with 15 or more employees must include the pay scale for a position in any job posting.
